I Mean Business

Occasion:

I don't really know why I dressed up so much today...it was pretty much a normal day of school, nothing too exciting. I did just get this jacket and I have been wanting to wear it and since it's a bit fancy, I decided to pick an outfit that really went with the business-y feel. I tend to dress up for most occasions, because for me, when I feel like I look nice and put together I have so much more confidence, I am more outgoing and I feel better about myself. I, personally, would rather be dressed up more for any occasion, than feel like I am underdressed. Also, dressing more casually for me, sometimes translates as 'shlumpy.' I don't have a lot of 'in between' clothes. Whenever I go shopping, I try to tell myself to get more casual clothes, but I guess I tend to gravitate towards items that can be dressed up more. I like to have variety and I feel like dressier items can always be dressed down, but it's harder to make a hoodie, for example, look nicer.

This jacket was one of my buy-it-in-the-summer-wait-until-it-gets-colder-to-wear-it purchases. And it just finally got cool enough. I love the black/gray/white pattern it was definitely a perfect dressy fall jacket! I also love the contrasting silky lining in the sleeves that shows when you roll up the sleeves a bit-which I had to do because of my short arms:) I paired it with my black pencil skirt. To give it kind of a mismatched 'three-piece-suit' feel, I layered this menswear-inspired vest over a white long-sleeve undershirt. This necklace was an AMAZING gift from R...I'm finding it hard to not wear it with everything! I wore my great black mocs and black tights to finish the look.

Outfit:

White Undershirt: Elzee (Brooklyn, NY)

Vest: H & M

Skirt: Target

Jacket: Banana Republic

Necklace: Gift from R

Tights: Century 21 (Hue)

Shoes: Zappos (Minnetonka)

Belt: Gap

When do you feel confident? What outfits make you feel great?

You make a great businesswoman! I'm terrible at the end of season sales... I can only think of what I want now, and find it hard to plan ahead. Sigh. I feel most confident in crazy outfits- fun pattern mixes, bold brights, a white summer skirt in winter.

Your outfits always look so good, just like if they were out of the J. Crew catalogue, which I love getting.

I do agree! I don't own a lot of hoodies and similar items because of that reason. I just don't buy what most people call as "casual" because I don't find them attractive. It is easier to dress down a fancy dress with no accessories than it is to dress up with sweat pants! Good point.

My sister-in-law used to always ask me why I was so dressed up whenever we got to see each other (which is rarely). I think she stopped asking because she realized how I dress everyday is not other people's typical "casual" outfit!

Glad you liked my post on "7 Reactions to Style"! :) I really appreciated that comment!

What do you think about adding some more pictures? I don’t want to offend anyone, text is really nice. Just as I’ve heard visitors acquire information much more efficient if there are certain helpful pictures.

I really like the mismatched suit idea here, it's a really good take on the menswear trend. I feel confident when I like what I'm wearing and also when I feel like it's something different, that maybe not everyone would wear. Knowing that I can "pull off" a look I love gives me a confidence boost.

It's nice that's it's finally gotten cool enough to wear those summer "wait for fall" purchases!

xoxo, Ashley

@Alltumbledown - thanks! the only thing about end-of-season sales is that you have to budget for it. you're right - it's hard to think about clothes in future seasons, most of us just want to buy clothes that we can wear immediately...but patience can have great rewards in terms of sale items:)

@Modesty is Pretty - thanks so much! that is a huge compliment since I sometimes pour over the J.crew catalogue trying to figure out how to recreate outfits with what i already own:)

@christa - thanks so much! it was a great purchase:)

@alamodest - thanks for reaffirming my thoughts:) i'm glad to know that I'm not the only 'crazy' one:)

@Valencia - thanks so much:) that's what I was going for

@Lisa - thanks:) it's one of my fav fall pieces!

@Kristina - thanks so much! It's always nice to find other people who value modesty and try to live their lives with that value:)

@Anonymous - thanks for the suggestion! I try to take photos of all of the components of my outfits as well as the outfit as a whole. What type of 'more photos' are you interested in seeing?

@Anna - thanks! one of my best friends gave it to me and it was even on my list of accessories that i wanted to buy for myself - so even more perfect!

@Ashley - thanks! I also feel that women are too worried about standing in a crowd because they are too over/underdressed. i think that that women should know that the best outfit you can wear anywhere is one in which you feel confident! confidence makes everyone look good and when you look good you feel good! thanks for reaffirming that!
